Mountain Iron
Mountain Iron is the birthplace of the Mesabi Iron Range iron ore industry, thanks to the Merritt family, who discovered and developed the Mesabi Iron range in the 1890s.
Growing with an eye on the future
Today, Mountain Iron flourishes with retail and new housing. West Two Rivers Campground is a municipal site with a beach, fishing docks, playground, pavilion and disc golf course. Celebrate this city’s achievements at the annual Merritt Days celebration, held every August, with fun, games and music for everyone.
A great location for learning about mining
Locomotive Park in “Old Mountain Iron” and along the Mesabi Trail is a great venue for learning about mining. With a vintage steam locomotive onsite, plus other mining equipment and informative panels about the modern mining process, it’s like an outdoor museum! There’s also a picnic area and shaded pavilion. The perfect place to stop while riding the trail or exploring the area.
