Gilbert
Gilbert has perhaps the widest main street in all of the Midwest, but it’s also known for great recreation, camping and a very special restaurant.
Swim, scuba and more
Like many mine pit lakes in the region, the waters of Lake Ore-Be-Gone are so clear, they’re a scuba divers’ paradise. With mining equipment and a few surprises sunken hundreds of feet below, these “lakes” are filled with rock-filtered groundwater, making them stunningly see-through!
Lake-Ore-Be-Gone also has a swimming beach, dock, fishing pier and pavilion picnic area.
Ride on!
The city of Gilbert has another claim to fame at the edge-of-town Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area (AKA The OHV Park). This is a riders’ paradise for ATVs, Jeeps and OHMs, with scramble areas, mud pits, and trails of all difficulty levels.
Camping in the middle of it all
The Mesabi Trail runs alongside the reclaimed mine lake and the popular Sherwood Forest Campground, headquarters for the annual ScubaPalooza and Ride for a Cure Jeep event. Overlooking lake Ore-Be-Gone, this friendly campsite is a favorite for motorized and nonmotorized trail enthusiasts.
A number of great restaurants and bars line the main drag of Gilbert, including the famous Whistling Bird. In summer, the kids love Kandy N Konez for treats of all flavors. Find these great dining destinations within walking distance of the campground.
