Snowshoe like a Pro on the Top 3 Iron Range Winter Trails

Never been snowshoeing before? Let’s fix that! The Iron Range is home to amazing winter trail systems that can (and should be) enjoyed year-round. This is especially true in the winter when the snow is just right and the trees become hauntingly beautiful crystal sculptures.

There are several snowshoe adventures that first time shoers should check out. We’ve also included  – because every winter adventurer should be well prepared!

Winter Nature Hikes at the Sax-Zim Bog

The guides at the Sax-Zim Bog hold snowshoe hikes for nature lovers interested in seeing the unique species that inhabit the bog during the winter season. While they do have free rentals available, there aren’t very many to go around for a whole group – so bring your own snowshoes if you have them and leave the free rentals for first-timers who might not have the equipment!

Giant Winter Views at Giants Ridge Snowshoe Trails

Giants Ridge of course has spectacular snowshoe trails, as well. There are roughly 3.6 miles of snowshoe trails that take winter hikers around Wynne Lake, through portions of the Superior National Forest, and their downhill fat biking trails.

Redhead Historic Snowshoe Tours

History enthusiasts who want an up-close look at history this winter should make plans for snowshoeing at the Minnesota Discovery Center guided snowshoe tours. This tour takes snowshoers to the historic Glenn Location, a replica 1900’s mining town complete with retired mining equipment, on the Minnesota Discovery Center campus followed by hot cocoa at a bonfire.

You can also use snowshoes – all sizes available – at no cost and explore the grounds near the museum. It’s a great way to get kids trying snowshoes while staying close to a warm-up spot. Be sure to bring a sled and try their new sliding hill!

First-Timers Snowshoe Checklist

Before trying winter trails for the first time, it’s a good idea to make sure you have everything you might need to ensure that the hike is comfortable, safe, and most importantly fun!

  1. Flashlight – An obvious must, especially for hikes taking place later in the day.
  2. Thermos – Staying hydrated is important, no shock there. Have some spare mugs on hand along with some cocoa mix for an end of hike treat!
  3. Spare gloves and socks – Even experienced snowshoers might somehow get equipment wet on accident. In those cases, it makes a difference when dry replacement gear is on hand.
  4. Winter Gear and Layers – Dress comfortably in three layers to ensure heat retention & wear insulated waterproof boots.
  5. Whistle – Getting lost can happen to anyone, and having a whistle to alert others nearby to your location is a simple and easy addition to your gear.
  6. Hand Warmers – It’s winter in Minnesota, hand warmers can be found just about anywhere and are a handy thing to have if the cold starts to bite.

There are countless other winter trails to be found on The Range for visitors to explore both for those in search of a challenge as well as those looking for a leisurely experience. Request maps and information here. Experience the beauty of winter trails in northeast Minnesota this season with a snowshoe adventure on the Iron Range!
