Explore Minnesota’s Off-Road Capital: Now With ATV Rentals!

Northern Minnesota’s Iron Range has become one of the Midwest’s premier destinations for ATV and UTV riding, and the community of Gilbert sits right at the center of the action. With rugged terrain, reclaimed mining landscapes, scenic forests, and hundreds of miles of interconnected trails, the region offers unforgettable off-road experiences for riders of every skill level.

ATV and UTV Adventures Await in Gilbert and Minnesota’s Iron Range

At the heart of the area is the famous Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle State Recreation Area, commonly known as the Gilbert OHV Park. Spanning more than 2,700 acres, the park features rocky climbs, mud pits, wooded routes, beginner-friendly trails, and technical terrain that attracts riders from across Minnesota and beyond.

Visitors can also connect to an extensive network of regional routes, including:

  • Quad Cities Trail: From Eveleth to Virginia north to Big Aspen Area and west to the McCarthy Beach State Park Area. Places to stop for a bite on the way: The Britt Lounge or the Wooden Table Inn.
  • Prospector Loop: Connect from the Ranger Trail and Gilbert area and into the Ely region. You’re in beautiful country here, deep in the Superior National Forest.
  • Ranger Trail: Connect from lodging and camping in Auora, Hoyt Lakes, Biwabik and Gilbert and take your pick of places to explore. Fuel up for the ride and be ready to put on some miles. You’re welcome for food and beverages at The Copper Nickel or Rudy’s in Aurora, The Haven Bar and Grill in Hoyt Lakes, and Vi’s Pizza in Biwabik.
  • Chisholm Trail system: Stop at Bimbo’s on Side Lake for pizza plus, or go south into Hibbing and Chisholm on the Northern Traxx Trail for dining, camping and lodging options.
  • Iron Range East and West Unit trails: You can spend plenty of time in “the park,” or the Iron Range Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area. Cross from the main trail system into the West Unit and go toward Virginia. You’ll find great views, especially when you cross the Tom Rukavina Bridge.

Together, these trails create hundreds of miles of riding opportunities across the Iron Range.
