The Quarry at Giants Ridge

The Quarry was built on the site of an old sand/gravel and iron ore mining operation and is now the #1 public golf course in Minnesota, according to Golf Digest. Since its opening, it has been ranked in the top 20 public courses in the United States every year it has been eligible. It is truly a unique experience for Minnesota golfers, and one that compliments the traditional feel of The Legend course.

The Quarry at Giants Ridge: A Guide To Minnesota Golf Gem

“It’s a great example of how an unusable piece of land can be turned into a recreational area,” said John Kendall, the PGA director of Golf at Giants Ridge. Just over two decades ago, the Quarry at Giants Ridge was nothing but a sand pit used for local construction. Today, this beautiful golf course in Minnesota is one of the premier destinations in the country and arguably the best public course in the state.

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with John Kendall. His journey with Giants Ridge began shortly after the opening of its sister course, The Legend, in June 1997. The immediate success of The Legend sparked the realization that a second course was not just possible, but necessary.

“We saw the demand and knew we had something special here,” Kendall shared. “Turning this piece of land, which hadn’t served a real purpose, into The Quarry was a bold step. But it’s one that paid off.”

A Transformation Unveiled

The land that The Quarry golf course now occupies was once an industrial site, a sand source in the Iron Range for local construction projects. It was a stark, utilitarian landscape that few could have imagined as a golf course. But course designer Jeffrey Brauer had a vision for something different.

Even now, The Quarry retains an industrial charm, with its rugged terrain and dramatic elevation changes that speak to its history. This juxtaposition of raw beauty and meticulous design is part of what sets it apart.

Playing the Courses at Giants Ridge

Giants Ridge has two courses you can play: The Quarry and The Legend. Each of them offers a unique experience. “I’ve never been on a golf course where the two courses look and play so differently. You’d never guess they are just a few miles apart,” he said. This variety draws players from across the country, many of whom extend their stays to fully appreciate both courses.

“The Quarry has an industrial look and feel, not a naturally occurring golf course, but it’s designed around the natural features.” Kendall notes. This course makes dramatic use of the natural landscape’s elevation changes and rough-hewn beauty. The Quarry is known for its challenging layout, featuring strategically placed bunkers, water hazards, and large, undulating greens. The industrial remnants are subtly woven into the design. This course demands precision and strategic play, rewarding those who can navigate its unique obstacles and varied terrain.

The Legend offers a more traditional golfing experience set against the backdrop of the stunning Minnesota wilderness. It features lush fairways, serene water features, and meticulously maintained greens. The design embraces the natural beauty of the area, with tree-lined holes and panoramic views of the surrounding hills. The Legend is celebrated for its playability and aesthetic appeal, offering a mix of challenging holes and more forgiving fairways, making it suitable for players of all skill levels.

Community Engagement and Junior Programs

Though Giants Ridge doesn’t host tournaments, it is deeply embedded in the local community, offering clinics and special deals for residents. Junior golf is a significant focus, with clinics throughout the summer and free play for golfers 15 and under every day after 12pm. “Junior visitors are always welcome,” the director emphasized.

Innovative Additions

Innovation is also a key part of Giants Ridge’s appeal. Last year, GPS technology was added to the golf carts, providing players with a fly-over view of the courses, which is particularly useful for newcomers. “It’s a nice addition for people who are not familiar with the area,” Kendall explained.

Planning Your Visit

The golf season at Giants Ridge runs from late April to late October, offering around 26 weeks of optimal golfing weather. “My favorite time to visit is in September and October,” the PGA director shared. “Cool mornings and the vibrant fall foliage make for a stunning backdrop.” But the course has something to offer through every season.

You’ll want to plan to play each course at least once. A 3-4 day trip is ideal, with time for fishing or exploring other local courses.

Giants Ridge provides accommodations and packages for extended stays, perfect for those looking to explore both The Quarry and The Legend courses.

You can stay at the Lodge on site with views of the green courses and woods. There are also many off-site accommodations in the Iron Range worth exploring.

For those looking to improve their golf game, Kendall’s advice is straightforward: “Get out and have fun.” Golf can be intimidating, but focus on having a good time. Enjoy the process and the little victories.
