From Hibbing to Hoyt Lakes and Beyond: Your Fall Color Tour Awaits

This fall, explore Minnesota’s Iron Range. We’ll give you some great tips on attractions to visit, places to stop for a bite or a drink, and even our favorite spots for treats and coffee. Here’s some ideas to get you started on your northern Minneosta fall color tour:

Hibbing: three hours north of the Twin Cities and home to some very interesting history!

• Must See – Hull Rust Mine View open daily in “north Hibbing.” The best view of active iron mining around.
• Must Do – Hike at Carey Lake Recreation Area
• Must Buy – Bob Dylan t-shirts at the Hibbing Tourist and Senior Center
• Must Try – Salmon salad or poutine at BoomTown Woodfire Grill and Brewery or a classic pizza at Sammy’s.
• Bonus Tip – The free Hibbing Historical Society Museum offers a great window into the town’s past

Chisholm: Just up the road from Hibbing

• Must See – Minnesota Discovery Center, one othe state’s largest musuems, with indoor and outdoor exhibits and great view of a reclaimed mine pit.
• Must Do– Stop at the Bruce Mine Headframe just off of Hwy 169 and explore the area. Take a walk on the Mesabi Trail, too!
• Must Buy – A treat at Black Bear Bakery
• Must Try – Homemade pasta at Valentini’s Supper Club
• Bonus Tip – Explore Redhead Mountain Bike Park, a trail system built in former mine pits, by shuttle bus! Minnesota Discovery Center offers fall color tours.

Virginia: A few miles east of Chisholm

• Must See – The view from the state’s tallest bridge, accessible on the paved Mesabi Trail from the east end of Chestnut Street in Virginia. About 3/4 mile one way.
• Must Do – Stop by Kunnari’s Kitchen and Farm Market for fall flavors and shopping
• Must Buy – A treat for anyone who loves chocolate at Canelake’s Candies. Many souviners there, too!
• Must Try – Ice bumper cars at Iron Trail Motors Event Center

Biwabik: Another few miles east from Virginia

• Must See – The world’s largest hockey stick and puck, in Eveleth on your way!
• Must Do – Ride the fall color chairlift at Giants Ridge
• Must Buy – A Mesabi Trail t-shirt or hat at the Trailhead building in Eveleth
• Must Try – A pasty (past-ee) at Carlson’s Sausage Kitchen in Biwabik
