Lucky for you, in addition to miles of beautiful ATV trails, the Iron Range has a number of top-notch campgrounds to enjoy. From rustic tent sites where you can rough it under towering pines, to RV spots with all the bells and whistles, there’s something for every type of visitor. 

Here’s a rundown of our best campgrounds on the Minnesota Iron Range, perfect for your ATV and OHV adventures. 

Sherwood Forest Campground: A Gateway to Nature and Adventure

Location: Gilbert, MN
Highlights: Direct access to Iron Range OHV Park and lake access.

Sherwood Forest Campground has 57 different sites, from full-service RV pads to rustic tent spots. The campground is a prime location for ATV lovers, with direct access to the Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) park and the Mesabi Trail. 

In the evening, the nearby town of Gilbert comes alive with local dining and events like the Land of the Loon Festival, so you truly have a lot of options from here.

And, of course, there’s the lake. With Lake Ore-Be-Gone right next to the campground, you can easily enjoy a dip in its clear waters to unwind after a day of riding.

West Forty RV Park: Comfort Meets Convenience

Location: Gilbert, MN
Highlights: Full utility hookups, ATV/OHV washing station, close to Ely and Lake Ore-Be-Gone.

West Forty RV Park blends comfort with convenience. You’ll find a variety of camping options from standard RV sites to cozy tent sites. Each camping spot includes a picnic table and fire pit, perfect for end-of-day gatherings. Plus, the newly constructed bathroom facilities and a camp store give you that extra bit of convenience that’s nice to have at a campsite. 

West Forty RV Park gives you easy access to the Mesabi Trail and Iron Range OHV/ATV Park, as well as Ely and Lake Ore-Be-Gone, making it a perfect central location for exploring the area.

Vermilion Trail Campground: Where Tranquility Meets the Trail

Location: Biwabik, MN
Highlights: Lakeside sites, direct boat access, close to Giants Ridge® Golf & Ski Resort.

Enjoy the quiet, peaceful surroundings of nature at the Vermilion Trail Park Campground located one mile east of Biwabik on Highway 135. This site is located on the shores of Embarrass Lake and is a favorite for families and solo travelers alike.

With 48 campsites available (Camper/RV, tent, group, and lakeside sites), each campsite has a fire ring, picnic table, and ample trees adding privacy between each site.

The campground serves as a perfect base for exploring nearby attractions, including the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway and the Iron Range OHV and ATV Park. Whether you’re here for the colorful fall foliage or the vibrant summer greenery, Vermilion Trail Campground promises a peaceful retreat in the heart of the Iron Range.

Heritage Park and Campground: A Touch of History and Nature

Location: Embarrass, MN
Highlights: Historic sites, river fishing, and access to ATV trails.

Heritage Park and Campground is for those who appreciate the quieter side of camping. Here, you’ll find 12 sites set among majestic pines and along the scenic Embarrass River.

There are several trails that wind through the park, so you can easily enjoy some biking or a leisurely walk to the nearby historic farmstead on the National Register of Historic Places if you want a change of pace from your ATV riding. 

Other activities to enjoy here? Try your hand at fishing, explore the small-town charm of nearby Embarrass, and check out the local artisan crafts at Nelimark Museum.
