Four scintillating snowshoeing destinations for this spectacular season
On the Mesabi Iron Range, we love our snowy season, and a great way to enjoy is it snowshoeing with friends and family. Our easy-to-find trails and convenient snowshoe rentals make having fun with this sport easy. And did we mention the guided snowshoe hikes at venues across the Mesabi Iron Range? With all this to offer, snowshoeing the Iron Range is an activity that locals and visitors love to take part in. Grab a map and head out!
Not long after the snow covers the trails, Minnesota Discovery Center begins offering guided snowshoe hikes, complete with rentals, typically on Thursday evenings and Saturdays. You can also explore their extensive grounds and designated snowshoeing trails at Redhead Mountain Bike Park on your own. Be ready for amazing views!
At Giants Ridge, enjoy women’s-only guided treks, complete with dinner, drinks and rentals, or go snowshoeing on designated trails or lakes like Wynne, Sabin, Mine Lake and Embarrass Lake (check ice thickness and be aware of where rivers may feed in/out!)
Carey Lake Recreation Area in Hibbing offers a snowshoe-designated loop that winds through tall pines, whispering birch and along a small wetland area. This lovely park is located in Hibbing’s city limits – just a short way from shopping, dining, lodging and other great places to explore.
If you’re looking for something well off the beaten path, look up the Sax Zim Bog and make plans to join a bog field trip. Or, visit the Welcome Center on your own and snowshoe on the boardwalk trails. Keep an eye and ear out for visitors like the snowy owl, northern owl or great gray owl.
