Iron Range Hallmark Holiday Cheat Sheet

The Iron Range during the holiday season is Hallmark card material, and sure, that’s a broad statement – but when it comes to holiday festivals, craft shows, cozy rental stays, and corner coffee shops, The Range certainly meets what many would consider prerequisites for that Christmas card feel. So, let’s unwrap what makes the holidays special in our slice of northeast Minnesota, from neat shops to craft shows and Christmas parades.

Holly Jolly Holiday Festivals

Let’s start with the first big Iron Range Christmas staple, The Festival of Trees Holiday Parade in downtown Virginia, MN! It takes place typically mid-November on Chestnut Street and features the whole downtown area decked out in lights, a holiday parade with a giant festive loon float at the head, and fireworks over Silver Lake following the parade. It’s the kickoff to the holiday season on the Iron Range and is filled with plenty of complimentary mini events and holiday specials at local businesses along the parade route for visitors to explore!

Next up is the Spirit of Unity Parade in downtown Hibbing which takes place along Howard Street typically around mid-November to late November. Bright floats, downtown deals and mini celebrations, and plenty of holiday cheer throughout!

Then around mid-December, visitors can visit the annual Bringing Light to Chisholm where Lake Street, Chisholm City Hall, and Chisholm Library put on a big holiday lighting party including s’mores making, horse drawn carriage rides, and a ho-ho-ho lot more!

Then there is the annual Weihnachtsfest in Biwabik at Carl Schuster Park where attendees enjoy Christmas treats around mini bonfires, music, and caroling before their downtown holiday fireworks show. Oh, and the town absolutely fits the bill for a Christmas card with Bavarian styled architecture throughout downtown along with a raised gazebo illuminated with Christmas lights.

Finally, shortly before Christmas, Giants Ridge holds their North Pole Night which features some fun holiday themed activities. More importantly, it’s when Santa hits the slopes on his snowboard! Visitors can go snowboarding with Santa and grab some pictures with him too. What a cool guy!

Craft Shows, Holiday Markets, and More!

It would be an enormous task indeed to try and highlight every single craft show during the holidays here, however, we do have a calendar dedicated to them!

Finding cute Christmas shopping experiences on the Iron Range is easier than ever with our Jingle All the Range calendar – check it out, and if small town craft shopping is what makes you jolly, you can map them out by location and date and hit as many as you’re able.

Cute Rental Lodgings and Coffee Shops

For cozy coffee shop vibes we have some great spots to highlight!

  • The Sugar Shack – downtown Virginia, MN bakery, coffee shop with a brick oven pizza oven and a front and center seat for the Festival of Trees on the corner of Chestnut Street!
  • The Hive – an eclectic coffee shop in downtown Aurora that’s only a few minutes away from Giants Ridge and Biwabik that feels like having a drink in an art studio.
  • Kunnari’s – a family restaurant and bakery not far from Silver Lake that has that classic cozy feel and a whole lot of flavor.
  • Black Bear Bakery – with locations in both Chisholm and Hibbing, this coffee shop has some classics as well as unique flavors and are comfy downtown stops at each location.

And for visitors wondering about some good places to stay during the holidays that feel like a home-away-from home we have a great selection to pick from on our website! Small rentals to gather the family close for board games and hot cocoa, spacious rentals to soak in the peace and quiet, and even lodgings like a yurt with a more outdoorsy flair for holiday visitors interested in getting some time on the trails are all found on our Lodging page and can be organized by location.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a full holiday vacation, the Iron Range offers festive fun, warm hospitality, and unforgettable winter memories. Bundle up, bring your holiday spirit, and enjoy everything the Range has to offer this season!
