For Minnesota Residents

The state has streamlined the process for Minnesota residents. Instead of dealing with separate registration and trail pass decals, you’ll now receive a single decal that covers both. This combined registration and trail pass system means:

  • One-time payment of $113.50 covers three full years
  • Access to all 22,000 miles of state and grant-in-aid trails
  • No need to purchase additional permits for in-state riding
  • Simplified renewal process every three years

For Out-of-State Visitors

If your snowmobile isn’t registered in Minnesota, you’ll need a separate state trail pass. Here’s what you should know:

  • $51.00 seasonal pass required
  • Valid from November 1 through June 30
  • Must be displayed on your snowmobile
  • Purchase before hitting any state or grant-in-aid trails
  • Available through multiple convenient channels

Snowmobile Registration Options and Special Cases

For Minnesota regisidents, registration choice and trail pass needs are closely connected – here’s how the two different registration types work.

Trail Use vs. Non-Trail Use Registration

There are two types of snowmobile registrations you can get in MN:

Trail Use Registration ($113.50 for 3 years):

  • Perfect for riders planning to use public trails
  • Includes state trail pass
  • Covers all grant-in-aid trails
  • Ideal for Iron Range exploration

Non-Trail Use Registration ($53.50 for 3 years):

  • For snowmobiles used only on private property
  • Cannot be used on state or grant-in-aid trails
  • Must be re-registered for trail use if plans change
  • Different colored decal to distinguish from trail use registration

So, if you’re planning on taking advantage of the many beautiful state trails here in the Iron Range, you’ll want make sure and get the Trail Use Registration.
