Do You Need to Register a Kayak in Minnesota? A Complete Guide

So you’re gliding across a mirror-like Iron Range lake, paddle in hand, the morning mist rising off the water. It’s the perfect kayaking day. And then the nagging question comes to mind—was I supposed to register my kayak? A good question!

To help you out, we’ve put together an easy-to-follow guide that’ll keep you legal and carefree on your next adventure. Here’s everything you need to know about kayak registration in Minnesota.

Do You Need to Register Your Kayak in Minnesota?

The short answer is: it depends. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has specific rules about which watercraft need to be registered. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Non-motorized kayaks and canoes 10 feet or less in length do not need to be registered.
  • Kayaks and canoes longer than 10 feet must be registered, even if they’re non-motorized.
  • Any kayak or canoe with a trolling motor or any other type of motor must be registered, regardless of length.

If your kayak falls into one of the categories requiring registration, you’ll need to obtain a watercraft license from the Minnesota DNR before you can legally operate it on Minnesota’s waters.

How to Register Your Kayak in Minnesota

If your kayak needs to be registered, follow these steps:

  1. Gather necessary information: You’ll need the following details:
    • Your personal information (name, address, etc.)
    • Kayak details (make, model, year, hull identification number, length)
    • Proof of ownership (bill of sale or manufacturer’s statement of origin)
  2. Choose a registration method:
    • Online: Visit the Minnesota DNR website
    • By mail: Download and fill out the registration form, then mail it to the DNR License Center
    • In-person: Visit a deputy registrar’s office or the DNR License Center in St. Paul
  3. Pay the registration fee: More on that below.
  4. Receive your registration card and decals: Once processed, you’ll receive a registration card and expiration decals. Keep the card with you when kayaking and affix the decals to your kayak.

Registration fees for kayaks in Minnesota are as follows:

  • Kayaks less than 17 feet: $10.50 for 3 years

There’s also a $7 issuing fee for new or transfer registrations.

In a few cases, you may be exempt from registering your kayak in Minnesota.

  • Your kayak is registered in another state and won’t be in Minnesota for more than 90 consecutive days
  • You’re a non-resident using your kayak in Minnesota for less than 90 consecutive days
  • Your kayak is owned by the United States, the state of Minnesota, or a political subdivision

Benefits of Registering Your Kayak

While it might seem like a hassle, registering your kayak comes with several benefits:

  1. Legal compliance: Avoid fines and penalties for operating an unregistered watercraft.
  2. Safety: Registration helps authorities identify your kayak in emergencies.
  3. Conservation support: Registration fees fund water recreation programs and conservation efforts.
  4. Access: Some areas may require proof of registration for access.

Kayaking Safety and Regulations in Minnesota

In addition to registration, kayakers in Minnesota should be aware of these important safety regulations:

  • Life jackets: All kayaks must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person on board.
  • Nighttime visibility: When kayaking between sunset and sunrise, you must display a white light visible from all directions.
  • Age restrictions: Children under 10 must wear a life jacket at all times when in a kayak.
  • Alcohol: It’s illegal to operate any watercraft, including kayaks, while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
