Soudan Underground Mine

A Brief History of Soudan Underground Mine State Park

Soudan Underground Mine State Park holds a fascinating place in Minnesota’s mining heritage. The park was once the site of Minnesota’s first iron ore mine, established in 1882, and later became the state’s oldest and deepest iron ore mine. The mine was operational until 1962, after which it was transformed into a state park to preserve this historic site. Visitors today can explore the underground tunnels and learn about the miners’ challenging work life deep beneath the surface.
