Perseid Meteor Shower Shines this Summer
From July 17 through August 24 with a peak August 12-13, stargazers will likely see shooting stars on clear nights in the Northland, thanks to the Perseid meteor shower. Luckily for us, no one around here has to go far to avoid light pollution. In fact, the eastern Iron Range, including Aurora, the Town of White and Hoyt Lakes, have some of the darkest skies in the state.
Camping Under the Stars
If you like starry skies and want to learn more about constellations, solar flares, dark skies and more, the Loon Lake Community Center is the place to be August 12. Pitch a tent in the grass or park your RV in the large gravel lot and get ready to look to the heavens. The first annual Camping Under the Stars event includes dinner, a children’s book reading, a bounce house, and a presentation by Dale Kentoph of the Range Astronomy Club, “Constellations and Deep Space Objects.” And that’s just the beginning!
Event promises fun for everyone
Try out telescopes, courtesy of the Range Astronomy Club, and catch a lecture “How Culture Shapes our Interpretation of Celestial Phenomena” by Lyle Kleusch. We’ll watch the PBS production “Northern Nights, Starry Skies” and have group fires for roasting marshmallows. A buffet dinner, if you choose, is included in registration, along with breakfast.
