Skibo Vista

Take in sweeping 30-mile views of the conifers and hardwoods found within the Superior National Forest from this overlook. Watch for soaring eagles and migrating hawks, and if you visit in the fall, the changing colors are breathtaking. This newly-enhanced scenic viewpoint can be found on the Superior National Forest Byway east of Hoyt Lakes.

Skibo Vista History

Not much is known or recorded about this site, but it was once home to a fire tower and offered a commanding view of the landscape below. Today, an interpretive panel tells the history of the communities and mines that were once located in view of the peak. There are various interpretations of what “Skibo” means, ranging from “castle,” to “success” to “troublemaker” in various languages. It is most likely an Americanized version of a European surname, but no one seems to know for sure!
