3 Ways to Explore the Mesabi Iron Range on a Budget
Travelling on a budget can always be tricky, and nothing spoils a good time more than being light on funds when having a good time. Luckily, there are quite a few ways to have a great time without breaking the bank and explore the Range on a budget!
Nature Exploration at the Sax-Zim Bog
The Sax-Zim bog in Meadowlands, MN hosts a variety of guided nature field trips throughout the year, including their special events such as their annual BioBlitz! What is especially great about these field trips is that for a minimum one-time donation of $25 visitors can be given the status of a Friend of the Sax-Zim Bog (FOSZB) and can attend as many of their guided field trips as they like for the duration of a year.
And as for nearby lodging (to save on gas), there is also a rental yurt nearby for nature explorers to use while learning about the numerous species found in the over 3,000 square miles of habitat found in the Sax-Zim Bog!
Ride the Mesabi Trail with an Itinerary
The Mesabi Trail connects numerous communities and is possibly one of the best ways to experience everything there is to see and do across northeast Minnesota. What is especially important to know is that the trail also passes through some of our area’s most iconic attractions and weekly events!
From concerts in the park to scenic overlooks, museums, and historic locations, The Mesabi Trail gives riders access to many of them along with quite a few campgrounds for visitors to stay between stretches of trail.
Visitors can also build an itinerary with the folks at the Mesabi Trail and even catch a ride back to their starting point from wherever on the trail their adventure takes them. For your budget, a three-day pass is only $10!
No Registration Weekend
Travelling on a budget isn’t just for nature enthusiasts and cyclists, but also for ATV riders! Annually on the second week of June is No Registration Weekend and ATV riders can experience over 3,000 miles of state forest and grant-in-aid trail systems including our very own trail systems along with the Iron Range Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area (OHVRA).
While it only saves riders a $60 fee for a three-year registration, that’s still savings that can be spent on a great meal after a ride!
Everyone deserves a vacation because life can often feel overwhelming. Experiencing the world, exploring new trails & enjoying the spectacle of natural beauty are worth everything and nothing at all – and there is plenty of natural beauty to enjoy on The Range.
