3 Best Snowshoeing Experiences on The Range
There is just something about exploring the wilderness in the winter that sparks excitement and those
who are looking for the best snowy strolls can find some truly unique snowshoe experiences on The
Range!
1. Minnesota Discovery Center, Chisholm
The Minnesota Discovery Center hosts guided snowshoe tours to and through their historic Glen Location, a historic fully restored mining town with towering, decommissioned mining equipment that
looks especially striking in the snow. The hike is followed up with a bonfire, hot cocoa, and s’mores at the Minnesota Discovery Center campus; warming up campfire-side is arguably the best part of winter! Also, if you don’t have your own snowshoes, they are available to rent!
2. Giants Ridge, Biwabik
This one is just for the ladies! At Giants Ridge they hold a ladies snowshoe hike that occurs multiple
times a season with a female guide for an afternoon of camaraderie and female empowerment. The hike ends with lunch at the Burnt Onion Kitchen at Giants Ridge along with a glass of wine to toast the
occasion. It’s a great opportunity for a girl’s trip or to meet like minded women with a passion for adventure!
3. Sax-Zim Bog, Cotton
And, of course, there is some great snowshoe hiking to be had at the Sax-Zim Bog, especially during one
of their winter field trips where naturalist experts guide visitors through the area while pointing out the
various winter species that inhabit the bog. The Sax-Zim Bog is known especially for its’ winter birding
season with droves of bird photographers visiting annually to try and catch a shot of the regal Great
Gray Owl, but there are so many more winter species to see while exploring their trails. If you don’t have
your own snowshoes they have a limited number available for visitors to use. (It is one of the most
magical nature walks to experience in the area, hands down)
Winter is known for being a quiet season, in the audible sense. That is what makes snowshoe hikes such a unique experience, hikers can fully dive into the tranquility of nature, the scope of a historical site, or the joy of the company that shares the trail with you. The wonder of winter is something everyone should explore, and all that is needed is a pair of snowshoes and an honest appreciation for exploring
new trails and making new discoveries along the way.
