Use the best app for navigation

We highly recommend using the Polaris trail app RideCommand to navigate our trails. There are connecting routes that use forest roads, county roads and other routes that aren’t on state or federal maps.

Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area

Gilbert is home to Minnesota’s first Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle Recreational Area (OHVRA). This 3,600-acre park has trails exclusively for ATVs including 4X4 vehicles, all-terrain trucks, and motorcycles.

“The park” is managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and covers 49 miles of trails. Trails are well marked to indicate the level of difficulty for all ATVs. Entry is free with licensed machine. There’s even a wash station! Trails traverse rocky hills, woods, mudholes and more. Tear it up in the scramble areas, try the hill climb, go crazy! The views are pretty great, too. It’s a playground for you and your toys – and it’s open year round except for deer season.

The OHVRA connects to Gilbert and the Sherwood Forest and West 40 RV Park campgrounds. From there, you can head to Eveleth – restaurants, camping and lodging – using the Genoa Trail, or go into Virginia and cross the state’s tallest bridge. Both towns are ATV-friendly with routes to places to eat and stay.

East Range Trails

New this year, you can ride east from the OHVRA to Biwabik and beyond. The 21 miles of East Range Trails connect to the Minnesota Red Dot and Prospector Loop trails. Again, use RideCommand for the best trail experience. These trail systems encompass hundreds of miles of trails, so get to riding!

Northern TRAXX ATV Trails

You can now ride from the Northern TRAXX trails based in Chisholm south to the Alborn/Pengilly trail and through Hibbing, or north to the McCarthy Beach State Park area. From McCarthy Beach, take the Taconite Trail east to Big Aspen Recreation Area and connect into 21 miles of trails at this US Forest Service system in the Superior National Forest.

You’ll also find opportunities to off-road on US Forest Service trails in the Superior National Forest, which borders the Mesabi Iron Range to the north. Find the perfect place to ride, whatever kind of machine you have!

Important Information

If you need service while you’re here, go to Five Seasons Sports in Eveleth. Coming from out of state? Youll need a state trail pass. Get them online or at these local vendors. Download Minnesota’s ATV Rules and Regulations guide for more info.
