Stone-Big LakesStone Lake and Big Lake are located 12 miles east of Hoyt Lakes on the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway. The hiking trail follows a small ridge from Stone Lake to Big Lake about 2-1/2 miles. Stone Lake is a shallow lake, and is popular for wild rice, waterfowl hunting and trapping. Big Lake is popular for walleye and northern fishing. It is also popular in the winter for ice fishing. A warming shelter is located on Big Lake. The hiking trail is a popular path between the two lakes.Directions: Located 12 miles east of Hoyt Lakes on Superior National Forest Scenic Byway. Drive east on Superior National Forest Scenic Byway for 4 1/2 miles. Turn left onto Skibo Road (County Road #569). Drive for eight miles (The road becomes Forest Road #120).
