Jenkins Creek Hunter/Hiking TrailLocated south of Hoyt Lakes off County Road 16, Jenkins Creek Hunter/Hiking Trail is an excellent trail for hiking and hunting ruffed grouse. The trail was built by the USDA Forest Service in cooperation with the Ruffed Grouse Society and the Northwood's Sportman's Club, Inc. The small cutting units along this trail provide the necessary habitat for ruffed grouse along with the small clear cuts of about 10 acres which are managed on a 40 year rotation which helps meet the seasonal needs of the grouse. Aspen provide feeding and covering for the birds, while aspen saplings and alder serve as brood cover in the summer. In the fall, grouse are often found at the edges of openings and alder lowlands. Grouse feed on catkins of aspen, hazel, birch, alder, as well as fruits including cherry, dogwood, wild rose and mountain ash. Because of predators such as great-horned owls and due to population cycles grouse numbers fluctuate from season to season. This trail is off limits to ATV's and other motor vehicles.Directions: The Jenkins Creek Trail parking lot is located on the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway (County Road 16 & Forest Highway 11). One half mile east of the junction of County Road 110 and County Road 16.
